BV vs Yeast Infection: Koochie K Breakdown

ALLLLLLLLRIGHT YALL! This is one of those topics nobody really taught us for real, but so many of us have had to Google in panic at least once: why does my koochie smell like fish and what is this yeasty white sh*t in my koochie??

Let me say this first… because it matters: your body is not “dirty” for dealing with either one. Both are common imbalances, not personal hygiene failure.

BUT they are different, and knowing the difference can help you respond to your body with way more clarity and less stress.

SO WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE???

Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of fungus (usually Candida). It often feels like:

  • Intense itching or irritation

  • Thick, white discharge (sometimes described like cottage cheese)

  • Redness or swelling

  • Burning, especially during urination or sex

It's basically your koochie environment is getting to "yeasty" and out of balance.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is caused by an imbalance in vaginal bacteria, where the "good" bacteria decreases and other bacteria overgrow.

It often shows up as:

  • Thin, watery discharge

  • A strong fishy odor (especially after sex)

  • Mild irritation (sometimes none at all)

  • A different overall vaginal smell than usual

BV is less about itching and more about balance and odor changes.

Here's the part most people don't say out loud:

You don't always have to guess or self-diagnose.

Because BV and yeast infections can sometimes overlap or mimic each other, the most important thing is listening to your body and getting proper care when something feels off. A quick visit to a clinic or provider can save you a lot of trial-and-error stress.

Koochie Truth

Your vagina is not supposed to smell like nothing. It's not supposed to be identical every single day. It's a living ecosystem, not a static object. The goal is not perfection. The goal is balance and awareness.

Journal Prompt

  1. When my body feels "off," do I immediately react with panic, shame, or curiosity?

  2. What would it look like to trust my body enough to observe it before trying to fix it?

Your body speaks in signals, not symptoms meant to shame you. Whether it's BV, a yeast infection, or just your cycle shifting things around, you deserve care that feels informed, not fearful.

The more you learn your body, the less you can panic about it.
